Analytical Calculation of the Nucleation Rate for First Order Phase Transitions beyond the Thin Wall Approximation

چکیده

First order phase transitions in general proceed via nucleation of bubbles. A theoretical basis for the calculation of the nucleation rate is given by the homogeneous nucleation theory of Langer and its field theoretical version of Callan and Coleman. We have calculated the nucleation rate beyond the thin wall approximation by expanding the bubble solution and the fluctuation determinant in powers of the asymmetry parameter. The result is expressed in terms of physical model parameters. PACS numbers: 05.70.Fh, 11.10.Kk, 64.60.Qb

The classical nucleation rate in two dimensions

In many systems in condensed matter physics and quantum field theory, first order phase transitions are initiated by the nucleation of bubbles of the stable phase. In homogeneous nucleation theory the nucleation rate Γ can be written in the form of the Arrhenius law: Γ = Ae −Hc. Here H c is the energy of the critical bubble, and the prefactor A can be expressed in terms of the determinant of th...

The Exact Renormalization Group and First-order Phase Transitions

Studies of first-order phase transitions through the use of the exact renormalization group are reviewed. In the first part the emphasis is on universal aspects: We discuss the universal critical behaviour near weakly first-order phase transitions for a three-dimensional model of two coupled scalar fields – the cubic anisotropy model. In the second part we review the application of the exact re...

Non - perturbative computation of the bubble nucleation rate in the cubic anisotropy model

At first order phase transitions the transition proceeds through droplet nucleation and growth. We discuss a lattice method for calculating the droplet nucleation rate, including the complete dynamical factors. The method is especially suitable for very strongly suppressed droplet nucleation, which is often the case in physically interesting transitions. We apply the method to the 3-dimensional...
